COVID-19 and How it Relates to Local 281
Published on Monday, March 16, 2020
Our state, nation, and the globe are facing an unprecedented moment with respect to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The situation as it relates to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is evolving quickly. Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 281, U.A. is working to implement measures to help protect the health of our members, signatory contractors, employees, and staff. As we work through the effects of this unprecedented situation, we would like to provide the following information:
In an effort to respond to potential exposure risks, the decision has been made to close the Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 281, U.A. Union Office, Automatic Sprinkler Local 281, U.A. Health & Welfare Fund Office, and the Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 281, U.A. Training Facility beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020 until Monday, April 6, 2020. The Union Office building will be closed to anyone other than direct office personnel. If these closures extend past this date, all members will be notified. Apprentices are to report to work for their assigned contractor on their school days during this time.
If any contractors or jobsite locations are closed, members of Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 281, U.A. are advised to contact the Union Office immediately to be placed on the out of work list. You are also advised to file for unemployment benefits. I have attached to most recent information provided by IDES regarding eligibility for Unemployment Benefits due to COVID-19.
Members of Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 281, U.A. have expressed concerns and reservations relating to COVID-19 exposure and the testing locations/laboratories for the Sprinkler Fitters Industry Drug-Free LMCC Alliance Drug Testing Policy. I have been in contact with ScreenSafe, Inc. and relayed these concerns. They have advised that if any employee of a signatory contractor is called for testing, and are hesitant to report to a collection site, they should advise the employer when they receive notice to submit for testing. The employer should note this on the referral form and return to ScreenSafe, Inc. Employees will then be returned to the pool for future testing without consequence.
I am also advising that you stay up to date on the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
We will continue to actively monitor the COVID-19 outbreak situation and keep you up to date with any new information.
One of our core principles is to ensure the health and safety of our members, signatory contractors, employees, staff, and their families. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work together to keep you and those around you safe and healthy.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Business Representatives or me.
